Embrace good hair days

The Yarok Feed Your Volume Shampoo ($12-$50) has received mixed reviews from the Truth in Aging community. Marta applauded the fullness the shampoo gave her naturally wavy hair; yet Gloria, who has fine tresses, was unconvinced by her results. This made me curious about how the shampoo would work on my hair, which I might describe as in between Marta's and Gloria's. It's straight, but not stick straight. Oftentimes – strange as it may seem – humid days are my good hair days. I seem to get volume out of nowhere. The downside is that my hair is prone to pesky flyaways, especially at the crown.

It's fair to say I've never been loyal to any one shampoo. I've tried everything from Pantene to Fekkai – but nothing ever blew me away. My first foray into natural shampoos was also a disappointment. The watery texture and minimal suds I experienced from these products just made me feel like I wasn't really washing my hair.

Nonetheless, I was game to scoop up the 2-ounce testers of the Yarok shampoo and conditioner and give them a go. Both are all natural, 100 percent vegan, and free of alcohol, parabens, and sulfates. The first time I tried the shampoo, I was pleasantly surprised. The formula wasn't seep-through-your-fingers thin like I expected, and (yay!) I was able to work up a good lather. The scent reminded me of pine (perhaps a combination of the shampoo's sweet orange and rosemary), which I didn't mind at all. I followed with the Yarok Feed Your Volume Conditioner ($12-$50), only on my ends as my hair gets weighed down otherwise. The thick, yellowish conditioner soaked in well but had a much stronger fragrance than the shampoo. Smoky is the best descriptor I can think of – which might not be so bad if you and your significant other are fans of the barbie! I figure it's the sage and tea tree that give this woody aroma. As Marta mentioned, both products contain the powerful antioxidant coltsfoot as well as chickweed, which can help soothe itchy scalp. So there's a lot to love about the ingredients… but what about the results?

Well, coincidence or not, the day I first used the Yarok combo, I honestly had one of the best hair days I've had in a while (apart from getting a salon blow-out). My hair was manageable (i.e. no flyaways) – and had a subtle lift and noticeable sheen to it. I continued to use the duo daily with mostly the same results. The healthy shine alone won me over. Not many products I've tried can add shine without making my hair look greasy. I was actually a bit sad when I used the last of the Yarok shampoo because I knew I would be on to testing another cleanser. Whoa, I just may have found a shampoo to which I can remain faithful.
